Below is an article published in the January/February Labor Newsletter.
Title of the Article is Help sought in battle to save OSHA
Peg Seminario, director of the AFL-CIO's Department of Occupational Safety and Health, is asking all division members to voice their support for OSHA in response to renewed congressional attacks on the agency. Following is the text of a memo she wrote urging members to respond to the challenge.
A new OSHA "Deform: bill (S1237/H.R.2579) was introduced on Sept 30, 1997, by Senator Enza(R-WY) and Gregg(R-NH) and Rep. Talent(R-MO). This bill is a retread of last year's OSHA "Deform" legislation (very similar to the Gregg/Kassebaum bills).
The bill would:
- Take away OSHA's enforcement mandate.
- Take away the right of workers to geyt an onsite inspection in response to a valid complaint.
- Privatize safety and health inspections.
- Immunize employers from penalties
- Limit worker and union rights in other ways
This bill is the most serious OSHA Deform threat we have faced this Congress. The bill was introduced with 20 co-sponsors in the Senate and seven co-sponsors in the House, including four Democrats (Goode-Va, Bishop-GA, Stenholm-TX and Dooley-CA).
Some Republicans, particularly in the Senate, are trying to ram the bill through and we have to move now to stop this legislation. Here's what you can do: Contact Senator Jim Jeffords, chairman of the Senate Labor Committe, and other members of the committe, and tell them this bill will hurt workers' safety and health, and that there should be hearings on the bill before any mark-up.
Contact your senators and representatives and let them know that S.1237/H.R.2579 will weaken safety and health protections. Ask them no to co-sponsor s.1237/H.R.2579 and to oppose this anti-worker legislation.
The telephone number for the Senate is (202)224-3121; for the House, the number is (202)225-3121. Please contact AFL-CIO Department of Safety and Health of you have any questions (202)637-5366, or email: Pseminario@compuserve.com.
