Participating in the Scholarship Fund

Dependent children of any member with the International Union of Operating Engineers Local Union 94-94A-94B are eligible to apply for scholarships.

The dependent children of the following employees are not eligible to apply for scholarships:

  • Employees of the IUOE Local 94 Benefit Funds, and
  • Officers and Employees of the IUOE Local 94, 94, 94B

A dependent child must meet the following requirements when the scholarship is applied for in order to be eligible for the scholarship:

Relationship to the Member

The dependent child must be one of the following:

  • A natural child,
  • A legally adopted child,
  • A child placed with you for adoption, or
  • A dependent stepchild living with you.

General Requirements

The dependent child must also meet all of the following:

  • Be unmarried,
  • Have the same principal address as you*,
  • Is dependent on you for over one-half of his or her annual support and is claimed as a dependent on your tax return*, and
  • Is under age 19.

*Note: If you are legally separated or divorced, then the child may live with and/or be the tax dependent of the legally separated or divorced spouse.

Scholarship Requirements

The dependent child must also meet all of the following:

  • Is or will be a high school graduate,
  • Has been accepted to an accredited junior college or a four-year college or university, and
  • Hasn't entered the college or university prior to the scholarship award.

 

Applying for a Scholarship

If your dependent child wishes to apply for a scholarship, he/she must do so by the stated deadline for the academic year. You must complete and submit a Scholarship Application.

Note: The 2024 Scholarship Fund application deadline is Friday, April 26, 2024.

As part of the application process, the Fund requires that you submit the following:

  • A scholarship application,
  • High school transcript,
  • SAT scores,
  • Typewritten essay describing educational objectives and ultimate career goals, and
  • Two (2) letters of recommendation.

Scholarship Payments

For scholarship winners selected subsequent to January 1, 2019, each scholarship will be for $2,500 per year for four years for a total of $10,000.  For scholarship winners selected prior to January 1, 2019, each scholarship will be for $2,000 per year for four years for a total of $8,000.  The amount of the scholarship may be increased or decreased from time to time by action of the Trustees. 

In order to receive the annual scholarship award, the recipient must submit documentation annually supporting the payment of tuition, room and board, and book costs etc. to the satisfaction of the Trustees. 

If you graduate early

Scholarship winners who complete four years of undergraduate studies in three years and have earned all credits required for graduation within that three-year period (because they have attended classes during the summers or have taken on extra classes during the regular school year), will receive the fourth year’s payment upon submitting your official final transcript to the Scholarship Fund Office.

How Scholarships are Determined 

Scholarships applications and criteria are reviewed by a third party. This third party reviews the applications and selects the scholarship recipients based on the applicant’s high school academic achievement, SAT scores, involvement in school activities, leadership in the community and a personal essay describing educational objectives and career goals.

Deferring Scholarships

Scholarship Recipients who want to delay enrolling in college, or who want to take time off from school once they have enrolled can have their scholarship deferred. One deferral, for up to one school year, will be granted. Deferral requests must be made in writing to the Board of Trustees.

The Board of Trustees may grant additional deferrals, or deferrals longer than one academic year in cases of extreme financial hardship (as determined by the Board).
